Clock of Ages: telling time through time | a free educational web toy with puzzles

Home page for Clock of Ages: telling time through time

My second free educational web toy with puzzles (my first was The Singing Orrery: a musical solar system).

As a lifetime web app creator and developer caught in a new reality, I’m building these apps as portfolio pieces for either a job, or a client, whichever I can find (or that find me). Maybe freelance marketplaces are the key?

I definitely need to add more puzzles. 😁 Hope it’s fun to learn from.

This is the second app in the Cruxially collection, a small, growing collection of educational web toys and puzzles.

Cheers!

Update — Alternate UI

Based on feedback from a BlueSky commenter, Clock of Ages now has a new optional interface that allows visitors to peruse time-telling devices throughout the eras via one timeline. Here’s the scoop:

How it works

  • Getting around: it uses the same brass lift with 169 stops: floors get named marks, every other stop is a small tick, and toys get a dot that turns gold once solved. You can
    • drag,
    • tap anywhere on the bar,
    • use the arrow keys, or
    • press Page Up/Down to jump a floor.
  • Each stop: it shows the same drawing, tale, toy and “on this day” as an opened case, with links to the timekeepers on either side. The toys are the real ones, and solving one on the timeline gilds its hour on the clock.
  • Dragging: the page’s words, drawing and paper tone change as you go, and a toy only starts when you let go.
  • Sharing: /timeline?at=pendulum opens on that timekeeper, and the address updates once the lift stops moving, so you can link the commenter straight to one.
  • Ways in: there’s a “timeline →” link under “five clocks →” in the main clock’s corner, plus links in the site’s link line and on /about. You can also access it directly at: https://clockofages.com/timeline
